Klor-Con® (Potassium Chloride Extended-release
Tablets, USP)
Q. I am taking Klor-Con® Tablets
and have noticed the tablet appearing in my stool. Is this normal?
A. Yes. Klor-Con® is a controlled-release
tablet specifically designed to slowly release potassium chloride
over an extended period of time. This is accomplished through
a wax-like matrix or core. This core is not absorbed by the body.
Since this wax-like matrix does not dissolve, it may pass through
the digestive system intact and appear in your stool. There is
no cause for concern. Actual patient studies have shown that Klor-Con®
8 and Klor-Con® 10 Tablets do release potassium
properly. By the time the tablet core appears in the stool, the
potassium has already been released from the tablet and has been
absorbed into the bloodstream, producing the effects your doctor
intended.
Q. Can the Klor-Con® Tablets be
crushed or split before taking?
A. No. The specialized delivery system of Klor-Con®
Tablets depends on the intact tablet core. Therefore, it is important
that the tablets are not cut, crushed or chewed. You should swallow
these tablets whole with a glass of water, preferably during or
soon after a meal as advised by your physician.
